Umbria con Me · Assisi

Small-group Assisi walk with the basilica

An official Assisi guide walks a group of no more than 15 from the top of town down to the Basilica of St Francis, with both churches explained inside. Pick it if you want the town and the frescoes in one morning without paying for a private guide.

Small-Group Assisi Walk and St Francis Basilica

About this experience

This is the walk most people book once they are in Assisi. Umbria con Me starts at the Matteotti car park at the very top of town and works downhill, so the climbing is behind you early: Santa Chiara, Chiesa Nuova, past the San Rufino cathedral, the Temple of Minerva on Piazza del Comune, then two half-hour stops in the Upper and Lower Church of the basilica. The listing caps the group at 15; one guest in April 2026 counted 10.

The basilica "admission" in the inclusions is the guided visit, not a ticket. Entry is free for individual visitors, as the basilica's booking office states, so the $69 pays for a licensed guide and a route that makes sense of the place. Inside, there are no labels and no photos allowed, which is where a guide earns the money. One cost the listing leaves out: groups use headsets in the basilica, and guests report paying for one there (2.50 to 3 euro).

Guiding inside is for ordinary days. On Sundays, major Catholic holidays, national holidays and on 3 and 4 October, the operator says the guide explains the basilica from outside and you enter alone, in silence; on 4 October the basilica is closed to visitors. Carlo Acutis is not a fixed stop either. An August 2026 reviewer missed him; if he matters to you, ask the guide at the start or read our Carlo Acutis guide.

How the day runs

  1. StartPiazza Matteotti car park

Meet in front of the parking ticket office at the Matteotti car park, the last one at the top of town, opposite the hotel NUN. Busitalia buses from the station run up here.

  2. 15 minBasilica of Santa Chiara

St Clare's church, in pink and white stone, where the San Damiano crucifix hangs and Clare lies in the crypt.

  3. 15 minChiesa Nuova

A 17th-century church built over what tradition holds was the house of Francis's family.

  4. 15 minPiazza del Comune and Minerva

Past the San Rufino cathedral to the main square and the Temple of Minerva, a Roman temple front that is now a church.

  5. 1 hUpper and Lower Church

The Upper Church with the 28-scene Life of St Francis, traditionally attributed to Giotto, then the darker Lower Church above the tomb. The walk ends at the basilica, the lowest point of the route.

What guests say

★★★★★

We had the pleasure of having Marica as our tour guide. She was absolutely the BEST. [...] She took us down side streets and truly showed us the best parts of this lovely place. [...] She recommended some of the best places to grab lunch, dinner and where to find the best gelato in town!

Our guide was absolutely wonderful and very knowledgeable. There is a lot of walking and stairs, but if you are ok with that it’s a must do!

Tips before you book

  • Cover knees and shoulders. The operator warns you can be refused entry to the churches otherwise.
  • Coming by train, allow about 30 minutes from Assisi station to Piazza Matteotti. Trenitalia's Assisi Link adds the 1.30 euro bus leg to your train ticket.
  • Driving? Park at Matteotti itself (Saba, about 1.30 euro for the first hour) and keep out of the ZTL, whose camera gates fine about 80 euro.
  • Carry a few euro for the basilica headset, and take your photos outside: custodians stop cameras inside.
  • Want Carlo Acutis too? His tomb at Santa Maria Maggiore is open daily until 19:00 (tomb visits pause 10:30-12:30 on Sundays and holidays); see our Carlo Acutis guide.

Frequently asked questions

Is the basilica ticket included?

There is no ticket to include. Entry to the Basilica of St Francis is free for individual visitors. The admission line covers the guided visit inside; budget 2.50 to 3 euro for a headset, which guests report paying on the day.

How much walking is it?

About 2.5 hours on foot, mostly downhill from Piazza Matteotti to the basilica, with steps and cobbles. One guest in May 2026 said it ran close to 3 hours. The listing says it is not wheelchair accessible.

What happens on a Sunday?

The guide explains the basilica outside and you go in alone, in silence. The same applies on major Catholic holidays, national holidays and on 3 and 4 October. On 4 October the basilica is closed to visitors.

Can children join?

Yes. Children 6 to 12 and infants up to 5 have their own rates, adults are 13 and over. It is a long walk on stone for small legs, so bring water and snacks.
