Assisi and Orvieto from Rome, honestly

A coach day from the Termini area to Orvieto, lunch near Lake Trasimeno, then a local guide in Assisi for Santa Chiara, Carlo Acutis and the basilica. Pick it if you want two hill towns with zero planning and accept a 12.5-hour day for it.

Assisi and Orvieto Day Tour from Rome with Lunch

About this experience

Greenline Tours runs the best-selling Assisi day from Rome: more than a thousand reviews and a 3.9 rating that tells you something. The coach leaves the Green Line office at Via Giovanni Amendola 32, beside Termini station, stops in Orvieto for about an hour on your own, breaks for lunch in the Lake Trasimeno area (Castiglione del Lago on the listing, Magione in one 2026 review) and spends the afternoon in Assisi with a local guide: 30 minutes at Santa Chiara, 20 at the Carlo Acutis sanctuary in Santa Maria Maggiore and about an hour at the basilica.

Why 3.9? The low reviews repeat four things. The day runs 12.5 hours, and one guest counted at least six of them on the coach. Orvieto is a short unguided stop, and the cathedral ticket is extra (8 euro on the cathedral's own site). Lunch splits opinion, from "very tasty" to "paltry and bland". And the tour is multilingual: commentary can switch languages, and one May 2026 guest said the guide spoke little English. The worst case on record is a May 2026 review describing a coach breakdown near Assisi, with 12 guests waiting hours and paying for taxis back to Rome themselves. One review in 1,060, but read it before you book.

The praise is just as steady: tour leader Cristina (spelled every possible way), the Assisi guides, the drive through Umbria, and Assisi itself. Do the maths, too. The regional train from Rome to Assisi costs 14.45 euro each way and takes 2 to 2 hours 45, so the coach buys convenience and Orvieto, not savings. If Assisi is the point, take the train and book the small-group walk; our Rome day trip guide has the timetable. Viator shows a 13% sale until 31 October 2026, and the tour needs 8 passengers to run (you get an alternative or a refund if it doesn't).

What guests say

★★★★★

Outstanding day trip! The drive through Tuscany and Umbria was beautiful. We had lunch in an amazing rustic setting. Seeing the churches in Assisi was a great experience. Cristina was the best tour guide: knowledgeable, friendly, and highly attentive and helpful.

★★★★★

I felt so welcomed the moment we stepped on to the bus and Cristina had so much information and history to share. Johana in Assisi was informative and I learned so much from her.

Tips before you book

  • Book by 31 October 2026 for Viator's 13% sale price; cancellation stays free up to 24 hours before.
  • In Orvieto, walk straight to the cathedral and buy the 8 euro ticket there: an hour leaves no slack.
  • Pack water and a snack. Guests describe a long coach day and a simple set lunch.
  • Cover knees and shoulders: the dress code is strictly enforced and you can be refused entry.
  • Avoid Sundays and holidays: guides cannot lead groups inside the basilica on those days.

Frequently asked questions

Why is this tour rated 3.9?

Guests praise the guides and Assisi but mark it down for a 12.5-hour day with about 6 hours on the coach, only an hour in Orvieto, a lunch many found weak, and multilingual commentary. One May 2026 review describes a breakdown with no replacement coach.

How long do you get in Assisi?

About 2 hours by the listing: 30 minutes at Santa Chiara, 20 at Santa Maria Maggiore and about an hour at the basilica. Free time is short; one guest reported none.

Is the Orvieto cathedral included?

No. Orvieto is free time, and the cathedral ticket costs 8 euro on the cathedral's website. One guest noted the listing doesn't make this clear.

Is it cheaper than going by train?

No. A regional train from Rome to Assisi is 14.45 euro each way, plus 1.30 euro for the bus up to town. The coach costs more but adds Orvieto, lunch and a guide.
