Winter is the season when you can stand in the Upper Church with a handful of other people. It is also the season of short days, a cold wind on the hill and a timetable that shrinks by half an hour or more.
This year adds two things: Christmas falls in the middle of the Franciscan Jubilee, and the Jubilee itself closes on Sunday 10 January 2027. Plan around those weekends and the rest of the winter is easy.
The quick answer
From November to March the Lower Church of the basilica is open 06:00 to 18:30 (Wednesday 17:30) and the Upper Church 08:30 to 18:00; guided tours inside run on weekdays only. Expect 1 to 9 degrees in January and darkness by about 17:00 in December. Christmas in Assisi ran from 6 December to 6 January last year. Holidays (8 December, 25 and 26 December, 1 and 6 January) mean no guided tours inside, and trains switch to the winter timetable on 13 December.
Is Assisi worth visiting in winter?
Yes, if you like empty churches and do not mind the cold: weekdays from November to February are the quietest of the year.
Assisi sits on the slope of Monte Subasio at around 400 metres, and the wind finds every lane. Nearby Perugia averages a low of 1.4 and a high of 9.3 degrees in January, with about 55 mm of rain over seven days. Snow is possible a few days a winter and rarely lasts in town; ice on the steep stone lanes is the bigger nuisance.
What you get in return is space. On a Tuesday in late November the Upper Church can be close to empty at 08:30, there is no queue at Santa Chiara, and lunch tables are easy to find. Wear shoes with grip, a warm layer you can keep on inside (the churches are not heated much) and remember the dress code still applies: shoulders and knees covered.
The downside is daylight. In December the sun sets around 16:40, so a day trip from Rome gives you about six usable hours. Start with the basilica in the morning and walk the town while it is light.

What are the basilica's winter opening hours?
Lower Church 06:00 to 18:30 (Wednesday 17:30), Upper Church 08:30 to 18:00, tomb 06:00 to 18:15; guided tours on weekdays only.
The basilica timetable switches to winter hours from November to March. The Upper Church, with the fresco cycle of the life of Francis, opens later and closes earlier than the Lower Church. All Sunday Masses move to the Lower Church in winter.

What is on for Christmas in Assisi?
Light projections on the churches, nativity scenes across the town and the basilica's own crib; last year it ran from 6 December to 6 January.
The town's festival, Natale ad Assisi, had not published its 2026 programme when we checked. The 2025 edition gives a fair idea of what to expect. From 6 December to 6 January, artworks on the theme of peace were projected onto the facades: Magritte on San Rufino, Chagall on Santa Chiara, Klimt on San Pietro and Köder on the Upper Church. The lights and the tree in Piazza del Comune went on at the opening.
There were also about 800 nativity scenes from around the world in the historic palaces, living cribs in the villages around Assisi with a free shuttle from the centre, a children's Christmas train, a medieval music festival from 21 December to 5 January, and the Befana coming down the Torre del Popolo on 6 January.
At the basilica, the friars bless their crib and light the tree in the Lower Piazza on the evening of 8 December, after the solemn Mass in the Lower Church (18:30 in past years). The projections only make sense after dark, which in December means from about 17:00: if you want them, plan to stay the night or take one of the last trains.

Christmas week is the busiest of the winter: book a weekday walk before 24 December or after 6 January.
Check dates for the small-group Assisi walkAre 8 December and the Christmas holidays different in Assisi?
Yes. On holidays guided tours inside the basilica are not allowed, Masses take priority, and the town fills with Italian day-trippers.
The rule is the same as on Sundays: your guide explains the frescoes outside, then you go in alone and in silence. The Carlo Acutis sanctuary also stops visits from 10:30 to 12:30 on holidays.
| Date | Day | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| 1 November (All Saints) | Sunday | Holiday; no guided tours inside |
| 15 November (World Day of the Poor) | Sunday | Events at Santa Maria degli Angeli all week |
| 8 December (Immaculate Conception) | Tuesday | Holiday; basilica crib and tree traditionally blessed in the evening |
| 24 December | Thursday | Normal weekday until the evening; midnight Masses |
| 25 and 26 December | Friday, Saturday | Holidays; reduced trains and buses |
| 1 January (World Day of Peace) | Friday | Holiday |
| 6 January (Epiphany) | Wednesday | Holiday; Befana in Piazza del Comune; last day of the festival |
| 10 January 2027 | Sunday | Franciscan Jubilee closes |

On a working day in December, one hour with an official guide inside the basilica is the warmest part of the visit.

The same cheap regional trains run all winter, but the timetable changes on Sunday 13 December and holiday services are thinner.
Regional fares are fixed and do not rise at Christmas: 14.45 euro from Rome Termini (2 hours to 2 hours 45, some direct, some changing at Foligno) and 17.60 euro from Florence Santa Maria Novella (about 2 hours 45, direct). The bus from Assisi station up to the town costs 1.30 euro, and Trenitalia sells it with the train as Assisi Link.
Italy's railways move to the winter timetable on Sunday 13 December, along with the rest of Europe. Times before and after that date can differ by a few minutes or a train or two, so check your actual date on Trenitalia rather than trusting an autumn search. Some regional trains run on weekdays only and disappear on 8 December, 25 and 26 December and 1 and 6 January.
For a day from Rome, the 07:43 gets you in before 10:00. In the dark months the 16:24 back is the comfortable choice; later trains run (18:12 and 19:59 in the autumn timetable), but the last bus down from town and a cold wait at a small station are worth avoiding.

Which Assisi tours run in winter?
The walking tours run all year; coach days from Rome and Florence can be cancelled on quiet dates if too few people book.
The small-group walk is 2.5 hours, which fits a short winter day, and it starts at the top of town so you walk downhill to the basilica. If you are two or more, the private walk costs one price for up to 15 people, and on a cold day a guide who adapts the route is worth it.
For the coldest days, the one-hour basilica tour keeps you indoors. The coach days are the risk: the Assisi and Orvieto day from Rome needs at least 8 passengers and can be cancelled (you get an alternative or a refund), and in winter it reaches Assisi in the afternoon, close to sunset. The organic winery visit still runs, but the vineyard is bare; the cellar and tasting are the point in winter.
Every listing has free cancellation up to 24 hours before, which matters in a season of strikes and snow warnings.
Short days suit a 2.5-hour walk: official guide, 15 people at most, both churches of the basilica.

Is the Basilica of St Francis open on Christmas Day?
Yes, for Masses and prayer, on the winter timetable. Guided tours inside are not allowed on 25 and 26 December or any other holiday, so a guide will explain outside and you go in alone.
Does it snow in Assisi?
Sometimes, on a few days most winters, and it rarely stays long in town. Rain and cold wind are more common: nearby Perugia averages 1 to 9 degrees in January.
When does Christmas in Assisi start?
The 2026 programme was not yet published when we checked. Last year the festival ran from 6 December to 6 January, and the basilica traditionally blesses its crib and lights its tree on the evening of 8 December.

On Sunday 10 January 2027. Until then the plenary indulgence is available to pilgrims who visit a Franciscan church and meet the usual conditions.
