Assisi walking tours compared

Six ways to see Assisi on foot, from a $7 phone app to a private guide. Here is what each one costs your group, where it starts and what it leaves out.

Assisi is small and steep: every walking tour here is about 2.5 hours, downhill if you plan it well.

Booking choice: The small-group Assisi walk, from $69 per person. Check dates Tour details

Assisi does not need a long tour. The old town is about a kilometre and a half from Santa Chiara to the basilica, and the guided walks on Viator all run around two and a half hours. What changes is who you share the guide with, where you start, and whether the basilica part really happens inside.

Remember the one fact that flips the maths: entry to the Basilica of St Francis is free. Every tour price below is the price of a guide. The comparison table comes first, then the questions people actually ask before booking.

The quick answer

For most visitors the small-group walk ($69 per person, max 15, 4.8 stars) is the best value. A family of four or more should look at the private walk instead: $263 is one price for the whole group up to 15 people. Short on time, take the one-hour basilica tour at $46. Book a weekday, because no guide may talk inside the basilica on Sundays or holidays.

What are the best Assisi walking tours in 2026?

Six options cover every budget; the small-group walk wins on value, the private walk on groups of four or more.

All prices are Viator from-prices in USD, checked on 22 October 2026. Every option cancels free up to 24 hours ahead.

Small group or private tour: which is cheaper for your group?

For one or two people the small group is cheaper; from four people the private walk costs less per head.

The private walk is priced per group: $263 covers anyone from 1 to 15 people. The small-group walk is $69 per person. Here is how that plays out:

  • A couple: $138 on the small group, $263 private ($131.50 each). The private tour costs you $125 more for the two of you.
  • A family of four: $276 on the small group, $263 private ($65.75 each). Private is now cheaper, and the guide works at your children's pace.
  • Six friends: $414 against $263, about $44 each. No contest.

Add 3 euro per person for headsets at the basilica on the private walk, which the listing excludes. Guests on the small group report paying for headsets too. One family of four put it this way after their private tour: the guide “customised the tour to our preferences given it was just my family of 4 attending.”

The private basilica and city walk by ARTexplorer prices per person on a sliding scale ($137 is the from-price; enter your party size to see the total). It suits couples who want a private guide without paying the full group rate.

Where do Assisi walking tours meet?

Three meeting points: Piazza Matteotti at the top of town, the Santa Chiara fountain, or the lower entrance of the basilica.

The small-group walk meets in front of the ticket office of the Saba car park in Piazza Matteotti, the highest point of the old town. That sounds awkward, and it is the smart choice: the whole walk runs downhill to the basilica. If you drive, park right there (Saba lists 1.30 euro for the first hour). From Santa Chiara it is about ten minutes uphill on foot.

The private walk, the ARTexplorer walk, the three basilicas tour and the audio walk all start at Piazza Santa Chiara, by the fountain in front of the pink and white basilica. From the Mojano car park, escalators bring you up close to it.

The basilica hour meets at the lower entrance, Piazza Inferiore di San Francesco 2. The Giovanni Paolo II car park is the closest to it. Arriving by train? The station is 4 km below town in Santa Maria degli Angeli; the bus up costs 1.30 euro and the Rome day trip guide has the times.

Is the one-hour basilica tour enough?

If the basilica is what you came for, yes: the $46 hour covers both churches and the tomb with an official guide.

The basilica tour with an official guide is the cheapest guided option in Assisi and skips the town walk entirely. You meet at the lower entrance, spend roughly half an hour in each church and see the tomb. Groups cap at 15, and one couple reports ending up alone with the guide and still getting headsets.

Two catches. Solo travellers report that the booking page will not always sell a single place; one reviewer “bought two tickets because there were no tickets for single person.” And on Sundays and holidays the talk moves outside, which turns an hour inside into a lecture on the lawn.

Pair it with your own walk through the lanes and you get the part that matters most for less than the full tour. The basilica guide covers what to look for.

The focused option: one hour, both churches, the tomb and an official guide, from $46.

Is the three basilicas tour worth $183?

Only if you want the Porziuncola with a guide and no bus: the price buys the ride to Santa Maria degli Angeli.

The three basilicas tour starts at Santa Chiara, drives you 4 km down to Santa Maria degli Angeli for about 45 minutes at the Porziuncola, the tiny chapel where Francis founded his order and died, then brings you back for the Basilica of St Francis. It rates 5.0 on 35 reviews, and guests mention the smooth taxi transfer.

What you lose is the town: no Piazza del Comune, no Temple of Minerva, no lanes. And Santa Maria degli Angeli sits a short walk from the train station, so if you arrive by rail you can see it on your own for free before taking the bus up. For a couple, $366 is more than the private walk for the whole party.

Is the $7 Assisi audio tour any good?

It is cheap and flexible, but reviews are mixed: weak signal, thin content and some login trouble.

The self-guided audio walk by Walking Cap runs on your phone in five languages, starts at Santa Chiara and goes through nine stops, including the Rocca Maggiore and the Roman forum (both charge their own entry). It rates 4.0 on 36 reviews.

The happy reviewers liked the freedom: “very easy to skip sites or audio segments you may not be interested in.” The unhappy ones hit dead zones (“Some areas of Assisi have weak internet and you lose the connection”), found the content general, or could not open a second ticket on a second phone. Download what you can at the hotel and bring headphones.

Use it for the town. Inside the basilica no audio app replaces a guide or the basilica's own audio guide, which you can book through the official booking office.

What do Assisi walking tours skip?

Carlo Acutis is not on most routes, and none of the walks reach San Damiano, the Rocca or the Carceri hermitage.

Since his canonization in September 2025, many visitors come for St Carlo Acutis, whose tomb is in Santa Maria Maggiore, a few minutes from Santa Chiara. The standard walks do not list it. In an August 2026 review, a small-group guest wrote: “My only negative is that there wasn't any info given on the new Saint Carlo Acutis.” An ARTexplorer reviewer noted the “Tour does not include the resting place Carlo Acutis.”

On private tours it is a different story. Guests report guides adding the tomb on request: a family of six on the private walk had “the opportunity to visit the tomb of Carlo Acutis”, and an ARTexplorer guide was “flexible in our tour as we wanted to see Saint Carlos Acutis.” Ask when you book. Otherwise walk there yourself before or after; the Carlo Acutis guide has hours and the route.

All the walks also leave out San Damiano (a 20-minute walk downhill), the Rocca Maggiore castle above town and the Eremo delle Carceri on Monte Subasio. Those need extra time or a taxi.

Can you see Assisi without a guide?

Yes, easily: the town is small and signposted, and every church is free. You lose the story behind the frescoes.

A good DIY loop: start at Santa Chiara (see the San Damiano crucifix and Clare's crypt), walk to Santa Maria Maggiore for Carlo Acutis, climb to Piazza del Comune and the Temple of Minerva, then follow Via San Francesco downhill to the basilica. About 1.5 km, mostly downhill, and three hours with stops.

One 2024 reviewer of the private walk decided: “I think you can navigate assisi without a guide.” Fair for the lanes. Inside the basilica, with no labels and no photos allowed, most people get much more from an official guide. A middle path many visitors pick is to walk the town alone and book only the basilica hour.

Whatever you choose, cover knees and shoulders, and go on a weekday if a guide is part of the plan.

Frequently asked questions

Which Assisi tour is best for families?

The private walk: $263 is one price for up to 15 people, so a family of four pays about $66 each and the guide adapts to the children. Add 3 euro each for basilica headsets.

Do Assisi walking tours run on Sundays?

Yes, but guides cannot speak inside the Basilica of St Francis on Sundays, holidays or 3-4 October. They explain outside and you enter alone. Book a weekday for the full visit.

Are headsets included on Assisi tours?

Not always. The private walk excludes them (3 euro per person at the basilica), and small-group guests report paying for them too. Bring some euro coins.

Which Assisi tours include Carlo Acutis?

The Assisi and Orvieto coach day from Rome lists Santa Maria Maggiore. Of the walks, private guides add it on request; the small-group route does not include it.
